All about Talavera tile....
Talavera is a type of majolica earthenware, a white and glazed type of ceramic. The Spaniards introduced this type of pottery however the term Talavera is used much more in Mexico than in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. Talavera is the oldest tin-glazed ceramic in America and it is still being manufactured with the same techniques as in the 16th Century.
Talavera has many foreign influences on its style and technique. These include the Majolica Process that comes from the Islamic world, and imagery derived from Chinese porcelain including the ubiquitous blue and white. Yellows, oranges, and greens came from the Italian Renaissance majolica. It is Mexican artistry and creativity that makes of Talavera, a contemporary art form. All Talavera or Majolica pieces are handmade or hand formed and hand decorated in the finest of detail using glaze colors in lieu of stain colors.
